L5Flyers Juniors Finish First Season in Greenville – Looking to Expand
The L5Flyers junior’s team wrapped up its first season with the Greenville Cycling Classic in downtown Greenville on October 15-16. The race was part of the Fall for Greenville festival, which included vendors, exhibits, entertainment, and in turn drew large crowds to the race. At the end of the street, in the Historic West End, criteriums are held all day long and into the evenings. George Hincapie made an appearance in the Pro/1/2 feature race. The criterium is one of top 10 in the country and may be the best junior rider showcase in the Southeast.
Three juniors from our team, Joey Rosskopf, 16, Nathan Tavel, 17, and Micah Moore, 15, raced in the event. The junior field included juniors up to 18 years of age. There were 46 riders at the start line. The field contained college teams, pro, cat 1 & cat 2 riders, and was very fast. It was a good experience for our boys in their first year of racing.
Joey, a high school tenth grader and the Junior State Criterium Champion, raced two outstanding criteriums and finished 4th both days (He has two more years as a junior!). Micah and Nathan completed both races and gained valuable experience. Unfortunately, Joey was disqualified on the first day because the official arbitrarily closed the gate to the junior gear roll-out before he reported. He took two cool down laps after finding our about the disqualification! Junior team manager, Ken Rosskopf appealed the decision, but to no avail. Both coach and rider learned that this particular official does things differently and we need to learn more about local customs when traveling.
The junior team’s season has now ended and the boys get a well-earned break. L5Flyers Junior’s Team is looking to expand in 2006. All interested parties should contact Junior Team Manager Ken Rosskopf at kenbikelaw@aol.com
