Aaron's/L5Flyers - Georgia State Champions

August 21, 2006 – Aaron’s Cycling Team dominates Georgia State Championship weekend with three victories.

Lee Anne Asbury started things off for the Aaron’s Cycling Team by handily winning the Women’s 1/2/3 criterium.  After spending several laps in a breakaway, Lee Anne came back to the field where Julie Granger strung it out on the last lap giving Lee Anne a great leadout for the victory.  Julie managed to hold on for third giving the Aaron’s team two spots on the state championship podium.

In Sunday’s tough state championship road race Julie and Lee Anne weren’t as fortunate.  Julie had a bad crash half way through.  Lee Anne stopped to see about her fallen teammate and asked the other competitors to stop as well.  Some did and some kept going.  Several minutes later, after confirming that Julie did not have a serious injury, Lee Anne remounted her bike determined to catch the girls that kept going.  Not only did she catch them, but she then went on to win the remaining KOM’s and ultimately another state championship.  Lee Anne was also awarded the Booby Walthour Cup, given to the top female and male cyclist of the weekend.

Meanwhile, on the men’s side, Erik Koep turned in an impressive performance winning the Men’s 1/2 Time Trial and his first state championship jersey.  A third place in the Road Race the following day locked up the Walthour Cup for Erik as well.

Aaron’s Cycling Team left Augusta with three state championships and the best male and female cyclists during a very competitive weekend of racing.
